Post-Trip Wrap-up #1
By Steve
As I settle in my new digs—hey, there’s a Trader Joe’s a few blocks from here—here’s a couple of action photos from the road, including this fine sample of what I probably shouldn’t be doing while going 90MPH.
This is what most of the trip looked like.
This is a very corny photo. (Har.)
Some final tallies.

All this lousy gas mileage and evil pricing of petroleum has me thinking. I’m just going to buy a deisel Volkswagon (probably a Beetle, because they’re cool) and convert it to run on waste vegetable oil. Then I’ll work out an arrangement with local restaurants to get all my fuel for free.

I’ve actually driven much of that same stretch of road across the US… twice! (as if once wasn’t enough). Reading your account of it brought back some memories.
The bugs killed tally… yes! And some of the larger, nocturnal bugs that you tend to hit… call an entomologist for ID…
Gyro - if and when the majority of cars are running on vegetable oil (or other forms of mono- and polyunsaturated fats), I’ll bet the price of it soars…

Boring is pretty gosh darn beautiful though…

Anything mainstream is going to be abused. The day will never come though. What’s important is that I can take advantage of a niche that few else will exploit in my lifetime and not just have cheaper fuel - I can have FREE fuel. (for the most part anyway)
I’m not the first one to have had this idea mind you.
On the other hand, if things ever got too bad, I could move to Brazil where they harvest their fuel and actually do keep prices dirt cheap. I think it’s Brazil anyway…

Good to see the move is coming along nicely. If it all comes together, you should have a smooth transition to the next stage in your life. Only time will tell.
