Showbox Time with The Polyphonic Spree

By Steve

This is where I was last night. It was an evening full of happy sounds and confetti flying all about the room. (This video really takes off around the 3-minute mark.) It was… inspiring.

(Note: I didn’t shoot the video or anything.)

Not sure if you were being facetious about being inspired, but I was somewhat bored.

I’ll take an evening with Don Caballero instead… and Don Cab doesn’t even have vocals.

It wasn’t one of the best moments of the show, but it’s all I found on YouTube. It’s also one of their earlier, overly-simplistic hippie-dippie songs. The newer ones were just mind-blowing, particularly when all 23-people in the band kick in at once.

I saw ZZ Top a few months ago. It’s a weird feeling when an entire crowd suddenly starts shouting “Well I’m baaaaa*aaaaaa*aaaaa*aaaa*aaad, and I’m nationwide!” in perfect synchronization. When you’ve been around in the Hall of Fame for years, people tend to know all your stuff I guess. Being something of a musical outsider, I just enjoyed the show, which was awesome. I also managed to find two vinyl albums the morning before the concert.

Excellent! You should have a great time; the show was fab. (And it’s early in the tour; they’ll have most of the kinks worked out by the time they hit your neighborhood.)

They wore the robes for the second half of the show; the first half was in the scary military outfits.

I went to a local record store in search of The Fragile Army on vinyl for just $15-20 (their online prices are often higher, so it’s hard to tell) but it was sadly sold out the day right before I got there. I did stumble across a 31 year old SEALED copy of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s One More From the Road with pretty much all of their great stuff live on it…

The search for cheap but new-from-this-decade vinyl continues. =(
