Wiiiiiii

By Steve

I got my ass kicked tonight—twice, even—at Wii Sports boxing by a non-gamer. Total ass-whomping. (First fight, first round knockup; second, I made it to the third round.)

I did beat her at tennis, though I’m not sure that restored any of my guy points. I mean, tennis? Please.

you forgot to mention she’s a foot shorter than you…

    it’s ok- you’re a lover, not a fighter.

(you know how i know you’re gay? you’re good at tennis.)

I’m fairly certain real-life height has no impact on virtual ass-kicking ability.

(In fact, you’re at a better level for the placement of the motion sensor bar, which is below my TV.)

We didn’t even try pool, or some of the other games that came with the second Wii controller. I can still save face.

Steve’s a lover? Is there a game where you can test that?

My sister-in-law came over when we first got our Wii. She hates videogames cause my brother is always playing sports games and hogging the TV. She was finally coaxed into playing Boxing against him and totally kicked his butt. She now keeps bugging him to buy them a Wii, but he won’t, can’t stand losing to his wife like that.

Oh sorry, I might want to introduce myself. Long time gamer, age 37 and Computer Games was my favorite magazine, so have been lurking on everyone’s blogs after the death of the magazine. Feel like I know everyone, been reading since Strategy Plus days. Also, even sent in an application once long ago for a hardware editor position. Luckily I wasn’t hired.

Ok we can try the other games…you know, so you can “save face.” (cough)

But hear me now: Every time I win I am going to say “Hello! my name Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”

Feel free to say: “Inconceivable!” each and every time I kick your asssssss.

I kick some serious ass at golf (we formed a club called “Chippers 4 Life”, my best chip in is from about 150 yards away) but I’m pretty much toast at bowling, just like in real life.

I’ve gone through stages in the tennis game, but I find it to be a bit too game-y for anyone but a real tennis player to have a fairly constant skill level without constantly playing it like a “real” game.

Nobody plays baseball or boxing anymore, but I’m proud to say that I almost always win at boxing. Too much Punch-Out! I guess.

Wii Sports is without a doubt the best party game in the world. I still play it more than any other Wii game, and nothing else has ever quite captured the true mundane yet satisfying nature of a real life thing quite like Wii Bowling has done.

Hi Craig, thanks for dropping by. It always makes me happy to hear people dug the magazine.

I have few skills when it comes to most games. I rarely play any single one long enough to actually get good at it. But I find it interesting when non-gamers can do well. I think that’s by design with Wii Sports, since it’s a pack-in game designed to sell the system. (Anyone can play and win!)

I haven’t even played Golf yet.

I’m pretty unimpressed with the Wii overall, but I totally agree it’s the best party system ever. And Wii Sports is a great showcase since everyone gets the motions required to play the included games. Guitar Hero is close, but it requires a whole lot more skill.

I’ve actually seen many people who have absolutely no idea how to play Guitar Hero even once they’ve been taught. The lack of musical competence in the world is very disturbing. Personally, I jumped right into Hard mode just because I’ve played piano for so long. I think Guitar Hero is much closer to piano than guitar, because people who have only played guitar never seem to have the same instant skill level that I had.

I’ve never improved since I started though, so there might be something wrong with that approach as well.

The Wii is the first of the next-generation consoles we bought, mainly because it was the only one my wife had any real interest in. As a gamer, it doesn’t offer much for the solitary in-depth gameplay, and the games like Zelda and RE4 just aren’t as comfortable to play on the Wii as other systems. However, as a party machine, or a system to pick up and play in short spurts, I think it is one of the best.

Of course, will never replace the PC or dedicated high-end console for graphic and intense gaming I believe.

We have a 360, but my wife would have preferred a Wii, I’m sure. Not that there are many games for it, and Mass Effect won’t be a Wii game, but it looks so damn appealing.

It’s definitely not a great primary system, but if you have a PC anyway, it’s a great secondary platform to catch all the games that don’t do exactly what PC games do better anyway.

I can see why the Wii gets criticism, but it’s still an important system that should be owned by all hardcore gamers. If not, you’re only going to be missing out this fall.

Wii Tennis is better than boxing. I played Tennis for months with my friends and it’s not as simple as it seems - things like spin and serve technique can make a difference.

Mario Strikers Charged is the latest Wii game to check out. I’m very impressed with it. It’s soccer/football with powerups and crazy superpowers and it’s been a blast.
